1. House for large or small dogs
Before you do anything, the first thing you have to think about is the size you are going to have. For a house to be pleasant for our dog, it should not be too big or too small.
The one that is not very small is obvious. How can you rate the size? Think that your dog should be able to walk inside without problems.
Maybe you thought the bigger the better. No, it can not be very large because it would no longer generate a warm atmosphere inside. Do not forget that one of the goals of creating this shelter is that your pet is protected from the cold and rain.
2. Values the importance of the base
The base is one of the fundamental points of a good house. If you had in mind not to put a base, you should be aware that you are not going to protect your dog well. Think about it for a second. In the end, I would sleep on the floor, with the cold and humidity that entails. Not to mention that it rains.
What should you value when building the base of your dog’s booth?
Insulation: Ideally you could insulate the floor with cement or concrete. Always look for materials that are impermeable.
The height of the base: it is not a good idea to build the dog’s house at ground level. It will continue to filter the humidity and if it rains a lot, it could even flood.
Measurements of the house will always depend on the size of the dog. I leave you an orientation:
Length: 1 1/2 times the length of your dog (without the tail).
Width: 3/4 the length of the dog (without the tail).
Height: About 1/4 higher than the height of the dog to the head.
3. Get the right Wood
If you have the right tools, you can buy the planks and cut them yourself. Recommendation: first draw the sketch of each wall or board you need on paper. Then, when you are sure, you put it in the woods.
If you do not have a jigsaw, make the sketch on paper and get a carpenter to cut it for you. You can also get a table saw the Skil brand to do it yourself http://thesawcritic.com/skil-3410-02.
4. Lift the walls of the house
To mount the walls simply we would have to apply adhesive mounting on the edges of the pieces. To reinforce the fastening we would use lag screws.
It is always good that the interior parts of the walls, for hygienic reasons, we give them some varnish.
Extra tip: if you want to give an extra grip and strength you can use frames (corners). Screw them into the corners of the walls.
5. Build the roof
You already have the four walls of your dog’s new home, we can only join the roof.
As we did with the walls, we will place some frames on the inner walls of the front and rear triangles (about halfway). Thus, when we place the roof, we can screw it on the frames.
Extra Tip: When placing the ceiling, take care that the boards are at a 90-degree angle. This way you will avoid creating a channel through which the water can be filtered. Another solution would be to place a batten between the two roof boards. Also, make sure you leave a good eave.
Different materials can be used to reinforce the roof. There are people who use asphalt or tared cardboard.
